I popped into this city last night. It was very disorienting and not a little scary... I mean, I was laughing, having a good time with my buddies, soldiers in the army, and the next thing I know I'm in the middle of an open, empty square with fountains in this lost city! So I went to the red building and found a home, got a bit of money, and spoke with people to get into guard work. It's what I know best, anyway. I've been trained a bit in affairs of state, but I wasn't due to take Dad's place for years, he wasn't that old, so I didn't pay much attention. And anyway, there's a king here already....
I went to work, and this was my first assignment:
Angwen: *looks over the rookies and points at one nearly elf-height* You. Ar-something. Get over here!
Artamir: *steps forward to her* Artamir, ma'am
Angwen: You know where the Houses of Healing are, right? *tucks her paperwork under her arm while she lights a cigarette*
Artamir: Um, not exactly, ma'am. If you just point me in the right direction, though, I can get there
Angwen: *snaps out directions* We've got a man down in there. I need you to get him his paperwork, since he was acting as a guard when he went and got his leg half chewed off. Go in and ask for Theoden and deliver these *hands over the papers* Do not leave until he signs everything
Artamir: *takes the papers and directions* Theoden. Got it, ma'am. I'll return after.
Theoden: *feeling sorry for himself in the hospital bed and fending off kittens who want to sleep on his face*
Artamir: *goes to the Houses of Healing, asking for Theo and directed to him, clearing his throat once he reaches* Theoden?
Theoden: huh? *holding a small fuzzball at arm's length* hi there.
Artamir: Hello. I'm Artamir and I was sent for you to sign some papers... *holds up said papers, glancing from Theo's face to the kitten to the injured leg and back to his face*
Theoden: oh. Hi. *oohprettyomg* Um. *drops the kitten on the sidetable*
Dagnir: *turns his head around to glare at Art full on*
Artamir: *small smile at Theo* How are you healing?
Theoden: not sure yet. Happened this morning. I don't feel much, they've been using their weird elf drugs on me
Artamir: Ahh, very soon! Angwen told me not to return until you've signed all the papers.
Theoden: bother. I don't feel like reading anything right now. *takes them from Art and tries to find a good position to write on them*
Artamir: Here. *borrows a book from the next bed table over and sets it in Theo's lap*
Theoden: *little stomachjump at Art's hand brushing his and gets to signing* she didn't waste any time, did she
Theoden: so you're new?
Artamir: *smiles* I'm new, yeah. I just got here yesterday afternoon. It's still very... new and confusing. But I know how to guard, so this is as good a place as any to start. Have you been here long?
Theoden: about two years now. *tugs his braid a bit nervously* It's nice enough.
Artamir: Wow, two years... Where, um. They tell me there are people here from all times and places... What about you?
Theoden: I'm from the third age, Rohan. Apparently right before the fourth age started, but I die the week before that starts
Artamir: o.o You know that?
Theoden: *little smile* I make it into the history books. Well, my death certainly does
Artamir: But... shouldn't people NOT know their futures?
Theoden: I got curious. And you know, I don't really think that's my future now. *looks at his leg* They said I wasn't going to be able to walk properly on it again, and the me from that time was of sound body
Artamir: Hm. *small nod* Still, it's a scary thing to know. *looks to his leg* You won't be able to walk properly? What about your duties?
Theoden: well, I did just get promoted to outside patrol. So much for that. *bitter*
Artamir: Perhaps it won't be so bad. *trying to be helpful*
Theoden: well. I appreciate the optimism
Artamir: *smiles* So, any tips for the newcomer? About the city or work
Theoden: coffee. Try the coffee
Artamir: What is "coffee"?
Theoden: it's a bitter drink that's amazing with sweets and it keeps you alert
Artamir: Interesting. I'll give it a try. *smiles*
Theoden: and donuts. Try the donuts. I'd show you around, but I'm a little incapacitated
Artamir: *chuckles* Thanks for the offer, anyway. I'll find someone to show me.
Theoden: good luck. Welcome to Gondolin. *hands back the papers*
Artamir: thanks! *feeling a little homesick for his family, but... takes the papers* Maybe if you don't mind, I'll come by again to see how you're doing...
Theoden: *bright smile* I'd like that a lot
Artamir: *smiles back* Oh good! I'd like to make friends here
Theoden: I'm pretty friendly! *don't think about how stupid that was to say*
Artamir: *chuckles* I look forward to it, then.
Theoden: see you soon, I hope
Artamir: *smiles* See you soon. Feel better! *waves and turns to head back*
Theoden: *main thought: nice butt*
Artamir: *takes the papers back to Angwen*
Angwen: good. *sets him off for regular training*
Well, that was interesting. He seems nice! I'd like to meet up with him again, hopefully not in the houses of healing next time. I wonder what else I'll find in this city that's different from the histories...
