Metal horses and other curiosities
I have decided to join the guards. After all, I cannot sit around and wait for something to happen. I must follow my calling to be the best soldier I can be. And, there are shiny horses!
Boromir: *shuts the door to his apartment and steps outside, feeling out of sorts. He walks down to the main square of town and looks around, unsure of what he should be doing.*
Dagnir: *races between Boromir's legs, carrying something in his mouth*
Theo: *chasing after and doesn't quite manage to dodge Boromir*
Boromir: *steadies Theo with his hands and grins* Is that your cat?
Theo: not for long *eyes narrow* Get back here!
Dagnir: *races up Greentwig the entwife and sits on a top branch and starts eating the stolen fish*
Theo: Little...
Boromir: Little? Hardly. That may be the biggest cat I've ever seen. *eyes wide*
Theo: And he's getting away with bad behaviour. Just because I have a healthy fear of being crushed by living trees. Oh. Um. *steps back from Boromir* sorry for, uh, all that
Boromir: No problem. *offers his hand* I am Boromir of Gondor. Well, formerly of Gondor. I haven't quite worked out how to get back there, so I guess I'm just Boromir.
Theo: pleased to meet you. *quick on manners and shakes Boromir's hand* I'm Theo.
Boromir: *smiles* It's nice to meet you as well. How long have you been here? You don't look Elvish, so I assume you're not a native Gondoliner...Gondoling?
Theo: Gondolin *gets the accent on it right* A year. I'm actually from Rohan. *smiles* how long for you?
Boromir: Rohan? *studies Theo more closely, decides he looks sort of familiar, but can't place him* I only arrived two days ago. So far, I am the only one here from Gondor. I have to say that it is nice to see a friendly human face. The Elves are so big.
Theo: that must be a new experience for you. You're not exactly short for a human
Boromir: *nods* It is. I'm used to being the tallest and now I am among the shortest in town. I'm also used to having a job. *gives Theo a wry smile* I was once Captain of the White Tower.
Theo: *sort of frozen 'please don't know me' smile* There's guards here. If you're interested in continuing that sort of work
Boromir: *perks up* Yes! I know that I can't be Captain, at least not right away, but I do want to be useful, and I am quite a good fighter. *notices Theo's curious look* Are you a guard?
Theo: *nod* it's not bad. And the captain's a good captain
Boromir: Then, I will go see him straightaway. *looks at Theo again* When were you in Rohan? What time, I mean? I can't shake the feeling that you look familiar.
Theo: You're gonna get that feeling again. There's a guy here that could be my twin. I have a feeling I'm not as unique as I thought before I came here
Boromir: How odd. I wonder if I have a twin, too. *gives Theo a sad look* I also wonder if my brother, Faramir, will arrive soon. It is hard not having family with you. What was your family like?
Theo: *frowns, doesn't like thinking about how much he misses them* Close. Lots of sisters. Let's... talk about something else.
Boromir: *nods* Of course. So, be honest with me. Do you like it here? If I'm going to be stuck here, I want to know what it's really like. Are the Elves nicer than they appear to be? They all sort of just wander around and pay me no mind.
Theo: Well. I like it. I mean, I miss home a lot, but it hasn't been a bad experience. And yeah, the elves will mostly ignore anything not-elf. Most of them have never even seen a human before this started happening and once they got used to all the small people, they just stopped caring.
Boromir: That makes sense, I guess. I suppose if the situation were reversed, I would not want much to do with them, either. *looks around* Is there anywhere to ride? I know there must be stables around here somewhere? And I also need a sword. *pulls his spade from his waistband* All I have is this.
Theo: there are, but where are you going to get a horse? All the ones here are owned. *looks down at the spade* It's very mighty. You can have a sword if you're a guard.
Boromir: Oh. *disappointed about the horse* My spade is anything but mighty. *laughs* I was gardening when I whooshed out of Gondor, and arrived clutching this. *thinks* If I become a guard, will they give me a horse?
Theo: there's guard horses. They're odd looking things. They shine like metal and they've got no mane to speak of.
Theo: I'm spoiled, though. I've seen the Mearas up close
Boromir: *frowns* A metal horse? I don't want one of those. But do tell me about the Mearas! I've only heard of them.
Theo: they're not metal. But it's something in their coat. And Mearas are... well, they're stunning. Smart as a man and will be with you your whole life if they decide they like you.
Boromir: *wistful* I want to see one...maybe one day. *still confused about the metal horses* So, they are painted metal? *frowns*
Theo: *shakes his head* I'll show you. My day off is going nowhere anyway. *shakes his fist at Dagnir* And I'll see you later!
Dagnir: mrooooowl!
Boromir: *stares at the cat* He's an odd one, that cat.
Theo: he's usually so well behaved, but today he's gone out of his mind. We were walking and he ran up and stole a fish off a stand. I already paid for it, but I wasn't going to let him keep it. *grumbles* the stables are this way *leads*

Boromir: *is excited* Oh, you are right! They are shiny. I've never seen such. *reaches out his hand to one, and lets it sniff. Pets her flank*
Theo: they're nice. Not on the level of the mearas, but... I like them. *pets one* Stable duty's pleasant
Boromir: *rubs a mare's shiny nose* I always enjoyed it, too. Even when I didn't have to groom my own horse, I always did. I think it helped build a bond, you know?
Theo: *nod* so you do understand. You've got grace time before you need to find a job, you know. To get familiar with the lay of the land
Boromir: I know...but I am used to being busy. I think I would be happier with something to do, a sense of purpose. If I can't lead my people, then I want to serve to the best of my ability.
Theo: Want me to take you to the guardhouse next? *trying to keep one of the horses from eating his braid*
Boromir: Yes, please. That would be great.
Theo: great. I need to get a fresh notebook, anyway. I keep using my field notebook for the wrong things *light blush*
Boromir: What sort of things? *notices the blush, curious*
Theo: Oh, doodles and notes and things that aren't really police work. *embarrassed he acts childish with it, not inappropriateness* I go through them fairly fast
Boromir: *chuckles* There's nothing wrong with sketching, as long as your captain doesn't mind giving you more notebooks.
Theo: he hasn't yet, but I'm not sure he's keeping track. *suddenly goes bright red when he realizes today's notebook is filled with his elf anatomy sketches*
Boromir: *stops, concerned at Theo's color* What? What is the matter? *puts a hand to his forehead* Are you unwell? My brother used to have fevers from time to time.
Theo: no. No, this is just a symptom of being a ginger
Theo: *covers his cheeks* Everything makes me do this, I swear.
Boromir: *wonders about that, but lets it go* If you say so. *grins*
Theo: I do say. Okay, your equipment as a guard is your weapon, a shield, armour, notebook, truncheon, everything else is supplied by you, like boots.
Boromir: *nods* As to be expected. Luckily, I did arrive wearing boots.
Theo: that's good. Although, give a look at the tailors here. Elves make nice stuff. I'm feeling a bit spoiled
Boromir: *gives Theo a once-over* Your clothing does look well made. Elves have always been good at that sort of thing. As soon as I have some money, I'll do just that. *looks around* Is that the guard house just there?
Theo: yep. The least fancy building in the whole city
Boromir: Then I can make it from here. *offers his hand again* Thank you, Theo. I hope we can talk again sometime. *likes that he has a new friend*
Theo: *shakes* probably. I get everywhere in this city.
Boromir: *grins* Good to know! See you! *heads off to the guard house*
Theo: *fetches his new notebook*
Boromir: *shuts the door to his apartment and steps outside, feeling out of sorts. He walks down to the main square of town and looks around, unsure of what he should be doing.*
