The one where Huan uses his nose for good.
For once, Huan tracks down something pleasant rather than a rabid raccoon or the neighbor's trash. Good dog.
Celegorm: *Walks up to the first stand in the farmers' market and picks up a red apple* These look nice, don't they Huan?
Huan: *nose in the air, sniffs* Woof! [Yes those smell...OOH! I smell something familiar!]
Celegorm: *cocks an eyebrow* Define familiar. As in perfume or cow poo? Both of those are familiar.
Huan: WOOOFFWWOOF!! [Neither! It's...] *dashes off without finishing*
Celegorm:...damn it. *puts the apple down and gives chase*
Huan: *sees Luthien and hurtles toward her like a speeding arrow* WOOFWOOF!
Luthien: *Minding her own business, browsing through the stalls of the market and picking out a few fruits and vegetables when a sudden, raucous barking makes her look up in surprise. Almost before she realizes what's happening, she's being accosted by a dog the size of a horse.*
(yeah sorry, had to help a customer check out XD)
Huan: *shoves his head against her leg, tail wagging furiously* Woofwooofffff! [Luthien! It's Luthien! I missed you!]
Celegorm: *sees Huan and skids to a stop, utterly shocked* ...Luthien? *takes a deep breath and slowly walks toward her.*
Luthien: *The shock is quickly replaced by curiosity. The dog seems friendly, so she strokes his head and scratches his ears, smiling brightly.* Goodness gracious, aren't you sweet? *She looks up when she hears her name spoken, no recognition on her face when Celegorm approaches.* Is this your dog?
Celegorm: *blinks a few times, then recovers* Oh, yes. Yes! *rushes forward and tugs at Huan's collar* He gets very excited when he sees people he knows.
Huan: *whinebark* [She doesn't remember me??] *licks at her hand*
Luthien: *scratches under Huan's chin when he seems sad* I'm afraid I've never met so fine a hound before. None quite like him has come to Menegroth. *she narrows her eyes slightly at Celegorm, as if she's trying to place his face* Have we met before?
Celegorm: Yes, but it has been a while...Or, for me it has. I'm Celegorm, son of Feanor and cousin of Turgon. My hound is called Huan, and he is very happy to see you. *smiles* So you don't remember...anything about us?
Luthien: *there's a hint of something in her face, but she shakes her head* Your name is familiar to me, but I would have certainly not forgotten if we'd met.
Celegorm: *watches her intently, wondering how to proceed* Then it might be best for us to start over. *reaches for her hand* It's a pleasure to meet you again, Luthien. *raises it to his lips*
Luthien: *raises her eyebrows as he kisses her hand, but she curtsies politely* You are well met, my lord. I must admit to feeling curious as to the circumstances of our meeting.
Celegorm: *looks away for a second and grins sheepishly* Things were...complicated. Your father took a diplomatic stance that I did not appreciate and we had a bit of a disagreement. That created some friction between you and me.
Huan: *snorts* [friction?? You kidnapped her!]
Luthien: *watches their interaction with interest, wondering what's being passed between them* That does not surprise me. My father can be... quite stubborn. *she wonders what the nature of the disagreement was, though*
Celegorm: That's an understatement. *looks at her with as much earnestness as he can muster* I do hope we can leave the past behind us, especially since you remember almost none of it. I've been given a second chance at life, you see, after being run through with a sword. And I know some of the things you'll inevitably hear from my asshole cousin will be less than savory, but I hope you'll remember today and keep an open mind.
Huan: woofwoofwoof [Nice sugarcoating, Celegorm]
Celegorm: *frowns at Huan*
Luthien: It's quite a lot to take in, but I won't judge you for things that have not yet happened. *not yet, anyway. She smiles kindly at him, and at Huan as well*
Celegorm: *heart skips a beat when she smiles at him and he smiles back, goofily* Thank you. So...what exactly do you remember from before you arrived?
Luthien: Only peaceful times in Doriath, though we are always mindful of the presence of Angband in the north.
Celegorm: *frowns* Really? *scratches his chin* Tensions are running high right now, and the darkness grows outside these walls. *Stops himself before launching into a history lesson that hasn’t actually happened yet* I fear it will only get worse.
Luthien: We are well-protected in Doriath by my mother's magic, but I know that not all realms are so fortunate. Are we not safe here? *a look of concern crosses her face*
Celegorm: *reaches for her hand again* No, no...we are quite safe here. The city is not called the Hidden City for nothing, and as useless as Turgon can be in battle, he's quite clever with disguises. Other than a few random wargs teleporting into the gardens or the city fountains, we're very safe.
Luthien: *she allows him to take her hand for the moment* I had heard that wargs and other creatures occasionally appeared. Yet the city is well-guarded, it seems.
Celegorm: *grins, happy to be holding her hand* And if for some reason the city's defenses should collapse, there will be no shortage of Elves and men rushing to your rescue. I know I would be the first one to arrive, should you need any help.
Huan: Woof! [and me!] *wags his tail*
Luthien: *she laughs and pets Huan fondly* I appreciate that, but you needn't worry. I am not defenseless. I have more than a few enchantments at my disposal.
Celegorm: I would expect no less from the daughter of a Maia. Just promise not to turn me into a toadstool. *grins* Where are you staying?
Luthien: I promise, so long as you promise not to do anything deserving of such a punishment. *she doesn't actually know an enchantment like that, but it never hurts to keep people on their toes sometimes. At his question, she gestures to the east.* Not far from here. I was given quarters near the market.
Celegorm: *gives her hand a little squeeze, then lets go of it* Huan and I are near the north gate. *looks at her intently* I have to confess that...well, I never expected to see you again, certainly not like this. Would it be alright if we came round to see you sometime? Huan will probably die of heartbreak if he can't be near you.
Huan: *wags his tail so hard he nearly takes flight* Woof! [Yes!]
Luthien: *considers that for a moment. Celegorm's past deeds are not unknown to the people of Doriath, but he seems very earnest, and he has a good dog. Eventually, she nods.* We wouldn't want for dear Huan to die of heartbreak, would we? You may call upon me, if you wish.
Celegorm: *grins like an idiot, then coughs to cover it up* Huan and I are both very happy to hear that. Unfortunately, we must take our leave. There is nothing in the apartment for dinner, and if I don't find something fit for a hound, he'll eat my boots. *bows toward Luthien* It's been a pleasure to see you again, dear Luthien, and I look forward to our next meeting. *tugs at Huan's collar*
Huan: Woof! *licks her hand*
Luthien: *curtsies and gives Huan another good scratch behind one of his ears* Until we meet again.
Huan: woofwoofitywoof [That went well. She likes you, I think. Maybe she won't find out about all the crap you pulled until later on.]
Celegorm: *ignores him and waives to Luthien over his shoulder*
I know, I know...she'll find out eventually, but I plan on enjoying her company before all hell breaks loose. On another note, my closet has been sorted! And Huan hasn't eaten any of my boots!
