I can go mining!
Makalaurë got the permission from Turukáno!
Maglor: *goes to the House of History, looking for Caranthir*
Caranthir: *comes out of his secret room and seals it, walking back to the section of the library where he usually works*
Maglor: *spies him a few sections over, makes his way across the room*
Caranthir: *feels something, looks up* Kano!
Maglor: Moryo! I've got something to tell you.
Caranthir: Yes?
Maglor: I've spoken to Turukáno, he's agreed you may mine in the immediate hills...
Caranthir: *blinks* Really?
Maglor: *nods* Yes. But there are a couple of small conditions.
Caranthir: *frowns* I knew there was a catch...
Maglor: It's not a catch, Moryo, it's a condition. It's only that you take someone with you. *stresses* For safety.
Caranthir: *takes a deep breath* Why? Just in case his Eagles decide to eat my eyes?
Maglor: Technically, they're not HIS Eagles. But no, it's so no one gets hurt. The terrain is rough, there are sheer drops in places, from what he's told me. And mining itself is dangerous at the best of times. Surely it's a good rule not to mine alone, here or anywhere.
Caranthir: *shrugs* Manwë's Eagles, I know, but they help Turukano. So I have to find another miner to go with me? Is that it?
Maglor: *nods* Or me or...someone. Just not alone.
Caranthir: You hate mining, Káno. *still doesn't like this permission with conditions* All right, I'll look for some miner... Turukano didn't measn guards, did he?
Maglor: True, I do. Still, it might be nice to get outside a little. *carefully* He did not say it had to be a guard.
Caranthir: You could come with me at least once. I could mine while you play your harp outside... If it doesn't have to be a guard, I can deal with it. I hate this place's guards. I met another one yesterday and he tried to tell me what to do.
Maglor: I will come with you once, sure. I have a map Turukáno has given me. And the guards are only trying to do their job, Carnistir. You do not have to like them all, but... *shrugs* I don't think ALL of them are loathsome.
Caranthir: One of them wants to get into father's bed or kill him. The other said I could trample over women or children because I was too tall and an Elf. It's not my fault that Humans are so small!
Maglor: *placatingly* I'm sure father will take care of the one with the schoolboy crush. The other was probably just trying to do his job, even if he wasn't tactful.
Caranthir: The other said he knew my name and that I was considered a villain in his city. I told him I would swear the Oath if you all did. *takes another deep breath* I am sorry, Káno. I should be thanking you for this. I am grateful that you managed to get the permission from Turukano. I just know he doesn't like us. I don't care, but you are my family.
Maglor: *frowns at the first part* It's likely that all of us would be considered villains in his city. You will make your own choices of course, but... I would not swear any Oath over again. *looks at him* Maybe he doesn't like us much, but you should care more, as he is king. And maybe he is not as bad as you want to believe. *half shrug*
Caranthir: *looks at Maglor* I know that swearing the Oath is a bad thing. I wouldn't do it. It killed us... most of us. I was just very angry at the Guard. What would you have me do? Accept what Turukano said? That I was not tainted like you or Turko? Or Father? It's not that I think he is a bad person, but I cannot accept his words when he condems you. What does he know of what you all went through?
Maglor: I am glad to hear that, at least. And you are right, he doesn't know hardly any of what we went through. He is not wrong to condemn father, Turko and I; we earned it. He's earned his own share of it too, but maybe it falls on him to learn to forgive the guilty as much as the innocent.
Caranthir: *nods* I know he has his reasons. That is why I don't trust him, but I will not do anything to give him an excuse to put me in jail *can't forget about the guards* He is the king, and his word is law.
Maglor: *gently* He is not going to put you in jail, Moryo. Or me.
Caranthir: *feels very young again* And what about Turko? Or Father if he snaps again? *thinks that Maitimo is safe because he's always with Findekáno*
Maglor: He won't imprison anyone unless they break the law. Let us worry about father if that happens...
Caranthir: All right. *won't admit he sleeps with a knife under his pillow, just in case* I will look for another miners, then. Once I know the place and you show me the map. I won't go with any guard, though. I'd rather look for jewels in the passage.
Maglor: *smiles* Good. Father will be pleased.
Caranthir: *relaxes* I will tell him when I go for my sword. Not about the passage but about me mining. Thank you for this, Káno. I love books, but I love mining more. I could even work in the forge with Father if I find gems I like enough.
Maglor: You're welcome, Moryo! You can keep an eye on Father that way too.
Caranthir: *smiles, pleased that Maglor trusts him with this*
Maglor: *claps his shoulder* Tell me when you wish to go out!
Caranthir: I will!
At least Káno will come out with me the first time.
EDIT: I knew there was a catch!
