A new friend

Eressil: *carrying a bucket of food to one of the pens*

Lúthien: *comes poking around, looking at the animals with interest*

Eressil: Careful with that one *talking about the secretary bird in the pen Lúthien's at* It has a habit of going for the eyes.

Lúthien: *takes a step back* Thank you for the warning!

Eressil: No problem. She's a nice girl if she trusts you and always catches attention. *opens one of her pouches and pulls out one of the lizards she breeds as animal food and throws it to the bird*

Lúthien: *watches as the bird snaps the lizard out of the air and swallows it down* Truly, she is a magnificent creature. I've never seen a bird like her before.

Eressil: So what brings you to my section of the city? Most elves avoid it 'cause of the smell.

Lúthien: I like to explore, and I wanted to see the animals. *smiles*

Eressil: You want a tour? I'm happy to. *gets to the pen she was after with her bucket and starts dumping fish in for the colony of little black birds in the water*

Lúthien: Oh, please! That would be wonderful.

Eressil: Well, you're in the bird section right now. Most birds fly off, but the ones here usually cannot, or wouldn't leave for some reason and were a nuisance. *gestures Lúthien over to the black birds* I don't have many of the same species in here, but they get along. They've got a lot of names, according to the people who answered my ad about them. But 'penguin' got five votes, so that's what we've got.

Lúthien: Penguins? They're charming. *watches them waddle around* I would never have dreamed of a bird that couldn't fly.

Eressil: Ha! Well, if you ever manage to get out of the walls, be careful. We've got some predators that are bigger than the girl over there that'll run you down and cut you open with their claws. They're in our time, but a lot more dangerous. I've been allowed to do surveys of the local area and that wasn't any fun. Let's see... *shows her the other birds around, including a brightly coloured talking bird*

Eressil: This one couldn't go anywhere because someone had clipped its wings. Poor thing *reaches up to brush the parrot's chest*

Lúthien: It's like a living jewel. *holds her hand out and gingerly strokes the parrot, which fluffs up happily*

Eressil: There were some little ones that all showed up at once, but they flew away. I think the flock lives in one of the parks on the south side of the city.

Lúthien: You know, I believe I have seen them. They make quite a racket.

Eressil: I need to find an owner for this fellow, he likes people enough. Now, what else... *shows Lúthien the lizards, and moves onto the mammals* You wouldn't believe the amount of hounds I have. They get brought here so they don't become feral in the city.

Lúthien: I do love hounds. We kept many in Menegroth.

Eressil: Well, they're obviously pets. If you want one... I adopt them out as often as I can.

Lúthien: *perks up* May I see them? I admit, it can get rather lonely being so far from home.

Eressil: Of course! *leads her to the pens for the dogs, lots of freedom for them to roam around*

Hounds: *run up excited at people*

Lúthien: So many...

Eressil: There's been a lot of dogs through history. *reaches down to stroke the head of one* Some end up here.

Eressil: Some have been in pretty bad shape and I've had to nurse them back to health

Lúthien: It is good for them to have such a faithful caretaker.

Eressil: Me and some others. We love beasts. *reaches down to pick up a puppy and kisses its nose*

Lúthien: *happily pets several of the dogs who come around seeking attention* Of all the beasts in this world, I believe hounds must be my favorite. So loving, so loyal.

Eressil: Would you like one?

Lúthien: *considers it for a moment, then nods and smiles*

Eressil: Tell me what you'd like.

Lúthien: I-- I'm not sure! Something graceful, perhaps?

Eressil: *looks Lúthien up and down* I have just what you need. I believe I've been caring for a sweet girl that looks like that for a few weeks now.

Lúthien: May I see her?

Eressil: *goes to where she keeps the domesticated canines and brings out the dog on a lead, stroking her silky ears* Here we go, ma'am.

Lúthien: *coos and fawns over the dog*

Dog :D *adoring demands for petting*

Lúthien: *scratches her behind the ears*

Eressil: You like her? She's not been any trouble, although she can be a bit sassy. *pleased look down at the dog*

Lúthien: She's lovely. Do you call her by any name?

Eressil: Just 'roch', because she looks like a little horse when she runs.

Lúthien: I'd imagine she does, with fur that long.

Eressil: *lets go of the lead and pulls a toy off her belt and throws it* Fetch! Go!

Dog: *tears off after it*

Eressil: See?

Lúthien: *laughs and claps her hands* Wonderful, she's splendid!

Eressil: So you're interested? Good girl, good girl. *rubs the dog's neck and takes the toy back*

Lúthien: Yes, I have been desirous of such a companion for some time.

Eressil: Well, she's all yours. She needs someone who can give her more attention than me and my workers. Most of our canines do.

Lúthien: I'll care for her as best I can.

Eressil: I assume you know what a hound needs, food and exercise wise?

Lúthien: Several of the markets carry food for dogs. She should be fed twice a day and run quite frequently.

Eressil: Then she is yours.

Lúthien: *crouches and strokes the dog's fur* Would you like to come home with me?

Dog: *ecstatic because attention and nuzzles up against Lúthien*

Lúthien: *curtsies to Eressil* Thank you. I'll see she receives all the love and care she deserves.

Eressil: *curtsies back* Come to me if you have questions. *head jerks up when she hears a bellow* My oliphaunt! I must go! *runs off*

Dog: *looks up attentively at Lúthien*

Lúthien: Come along, then. We're going to have to think of a name for you.

Dog: *trots along beside Lúthien obediently*
