A hack, like old times

It took a little convincing, but Turukáno has agreed to ride with me, outside the city! It's not that I don't like the city, or a trot through the park... It's just nice to be beyond the city walls. And I haven't had the chance to see much of Middle-earth yet.

Finrod: Turukáno!

Turgon: Yes, cousin?

Finrod: Come ride with me!

Turgon: Yes alright.

Finrod: Good! I'll wait for you to get your cloak.

Turgon: *fetches, and grabs his sword while he's at it*

Finrod: *grins* Ready?

Turgon: Ready. Why are you so happy? It's cold out.

Finrod: It doesn't seem so cold. And anyway, I am excited to ride.

Turgon: Park not good enough?
Turgon: Or did you piss off our ent?

Finrod: The park is lovely but... It will be fun to go out.

Turgon: It's a huge city. You act like I've got you all in tiny cages.

Finrod: You can't gallop on stone, is all.

Turgon: That's true.

Finrod: *heads toward the stables* You'll thank me later.

Turgon: Sure, sure. When something eats me out there, I'm going to wait in the halls at the entrance to kick you when you show up.

Finrod: *grins* Sure, sure...

Turgon: *grumbles half-heartedly as they get onto their horses*

Finrod: *gathers his reins* Ready?

Turgon: Ready, o Finrod.

Finrod: Good! *nudges his horse forward toward the gates*

Turgon: *waves to the guards to let them out*

Finrod: *picks up a trot*

Turgon: Careful over the water...

Finrod: I'm not planning on vaulting off into the water.

Turgon: Well, just stay away from the edges. We've only lost one person so far, but...

Finrod: Istel won't let us get eaten. *pats the horse's neck*

Turgon: She's lovely. But I worry. Come on. *rides down to the path to the fields*

Finrod: *follows* See? This is nice.

Turgon: Yeah, yeah. *enjoying himself*

Finrod: *amused grin* Let's have a run!

Turgon: I'll beat you.

Finrod: *laughs* Maybe! Maybe not!

Turgon: *urges his horse forward* Let's give Finrod a run for his money, hm? *pats her*

Finrod: *lets his horse break into a gallop*

Turgon: *races!*

Finrod: *laughing, hunching low over his horse's withers*

Turgon: *definitely grinning now*

Finrod: *looks over at him* See?!

Turgon: Hush!

Finrod: *grins* I'm going to win!

Turgon: Bah!

Finrod: *slows Istel, breathless* Maybe you should ride more often. If you want a chance at winning.

Turgon: Maybe. I'll consider it. *catching his own breath and grinning*

Finrod: *slightest slight smirk* Told you.

Turgon: *fistshake*

Finrod: *walks on a loose rein, bantering good-naturedly*

Turgon: Feeling less cooped in now?

Finrod: *nods* Thank you for coming with me.

Turgon: Just sharing the magical moment with you

Finrod: *laughs* Oh hush.

Turgon: How long do you want to stay out?

Finrod: How long are you going to let me?

Turgon: I don't want to be out here once the sun sets...

Finrod: *nods* That's fair. Nor I, really. It will get cold.

Turgon: Not just that. Of course, we do have someone watching out for us *waves up to a giant eagle*

Finrod: *looks up, watching the eagle a few moments* Dark creatures. Yes I know.

Turgon: Aren't they beautiful?

Finrod: *nods* Yes.

Turgon: They could eat us pretty easily, of course.

Finrod: *grins at him* You're so morbid, Turukáno.

Turgon: Of course I am.

Finrod: *shakes his head*

Turgon: I've seen a lot.

Finrod: I know.

Turgon: And middle earth mostly seems to be full of hungry things.

Finrod: *teasing* I am a hungry thing...

Turgon: I better run then. *sets his horse to running*

Finrod: Hey! *urges his horse after him*

Turgon: *laughing and head down a pass*

Finrod: *gamely following*

Turgon: *comes to a halt eventually, by a waterfall*

Finrod: *pulls up next to him* Pretty.

Turgon: *hops off his horse* Break time. It's been too long since I rode.

Finrod: *grins, dismounting too* Told you.

Turgon: I'm going to ache and it'll be your fault.

Finrod: *stretches out on the ground; cheerfully* Yep!

Turgon: *flops down beside him, and looks up at the sky through the greenery and rocks*

Finrod: Aren't you glad I convinced you to come out? *gazing around*

Turgon: You've had worse ideas.

Finrod: Such as?

Turgon: Shh. Enjoying the moment

Finrod: *grins* Sorry. *rests on his elbows*

Turgon: *happy sigh and seems to relax just a fraction*

Finrod: *good* It's pretty here.

Turgon: Ulmo led me to a wonderful place.

Finrod: *nods* It's lovely.

Turgon: Of course, I do keep picturing it destroyed thanks to Melkor.

Finrod: *looks at him* I'm sorry.

Turgon: I'm having my archers put serious work into finding small 'insta dragon kill' points

Finrod: *nods* I'm pretty good with a bow.

Turgon: We've got hundreds of years to practice and become perfect.

Finrod: Exactly!

Turgon: *quietly* I need some advice.

Finrod: *looks at him* What?

Turgon: My dreams are being, well, unfaithful to my wife.

Finrod: ...Really? *curious, no judgment*

Turgon: And it's starting to creep into my daylife. I doubt they know.

Finrod: Who? *quickly* Unless you don't want to tell me.

Turgon: It's the absolute worst person possible.

Finrod: ...Who?

Turgon: An elderly human. *rubs his nose* So it's like fast-tracking the grief even if I bother acting on it.

Finrod: That doesn't sound so dire. I thought you might say Celegorm.

Turgon: ...*green*

Finrod: *slight grin* Sorry. But...this human... You love *guesses* her?

Turgon: I don't love anyone.
Turgon: I just mean, she's fascinating me. In my dreams and I keep thinking up reasons to see her, then getting rid of the reasons.

Finrod: Turukáno.
Finrod: Why shouldn't you see her? If you like her...

Turgon: Well. One, Elenwë. Two, if I do give into the fascination and grow fond of her, she'll be dead before I can blink. And that's exactly what my mind needs.

Finrod: *frowns thoughtfully* Surely talking to another woman is not unfaithful to Elenwë. But I see your dilemma. Still... It's not a bad thing, growing fond of someone...

Turgon: *little nod* No, I mean, friendship I suppose would be... acceptable.

Finrod: *nods* Elenwë would want you to be happy, Turukáno.

Turgon: I know that. And... well, I suppose a human wouldn't be like the situation like Indis and Miriel.

Finrod: No, of course not.

Turgon: ...of course, Elenwë's probably in the halls wondering what's taking me so long.

Finrod: To stop shutting everyone out? Probably.

Turgon: Not what I meant. *swats Finrod*

Finrod: Morbid.

Turgon: That’s me.

Finrod: What are you going to do then?

Turgon: Do what I do best. Repress and then become a sad, bitter man.

Finrod: *gives him a Look*

Turgon: What? I'm just skipping to the end.

Finrod: Bad answer!

Turgon: And what does wise Finrod recommend?

Finrod: That you get to know this person.

Turgon: if this breaks me, I'll hold you responsible.

Finrod: It won't break you. I'll glue you back together you know.

Turgon: Thank you, I think.

Finrod: You're welcome. Shall we head back? Before it gets dark.

Turgon: *nods and gets back onto his horse*

Finrod: *mounts up too*

Turgon: *rides back to Gondolin with him*

That was wonderful. It's good for Turukáno to have a bit of fun and to unwind a bit. Even if most of the time he needs someone to force it on him, being so caught up in duty. I'll drag him out for another gallop soon, so he doesn't run himself into the ground. I hope he does get to know that woman he spoke of.
