A hunting trip!

It's been a long while since the last time I hunted with Elrohir...

Elladan: *is waiting for Celegorm at the gate, with his hunting gear and his sword, just in case*

Celegorm: *rides up to the gate, bow and quiver strapped to his back* Elladan! How are you? Ready to go kill some beasts?

Elladan: Yes, ready! *mounts his horse* I'm well! You lead. I have been out as now I'm a guard of the Gates, but not on a hunting trip.

Celegorm: Sure thing. Follow me. *gives the guard a wave and rides out, heading south toward the forests*

Elladan: *follows, glad to be outside and not on duty* Have you heard of the murders in the city?

Celegorm: Yes, I have, but I've tried to not get involved. I think that's best left to the guards. *grins* I hear they have a very capable captain.

Elladan: I am a guard now, but my duty is at the gates, so I'm not on it either. *smiles* I saw your brother yesterday. Maglor, I mean.

Celegorm: Did you? I need to visit Kana again sometime soon. It's easy to get caught up and lose track of time, but family is important. *looks at Elladan* How is he?

Elladan: He is well, from what I saw. I called him to the House of Healing because there was a new arrival he might know. Daeron of Doriath, but from the future. The Elf was a bit traumatized, but I think that Maglor calmed him.

Celegorm: *rolls his eyes* Daeron is a whiny snitch who knows nothing of loyalty. He'll be lucky if Luthien doesn't run him through with her sword, I'd be shocked. *shrugs* I suppose he and Kana have something in common, though. Music.

Elladan: I believe he was trying to be loyal to his King and save Lúthien, but we may not agree on that. *shrugs* I do hope she doesn't attack him. We are family after all. Has she already met Beren?

Celegorm: *cuts his eyes at Elladan* Eru, I hope not. If he shows up here, there will be all sorts of problems. *shrugs* And I suppose you can't choose your family. There are a couple of cousins I'd be happy to disown.

Elladan: *looks at him pointedly* She must be a remarkable woman. I have never loved an elleth like that so I can't judge. I was just wondering... if she hasn't met Beren and Idril hasn't met Tuor, then I might not be related to them anymore. Isn't it strange how history is changing?

Celegorm: Hmm. I haven't quite thought of it like that, but I suppose you are right. If Lulu never meets Beren, well...Maybe you'd end up a bunny or something. I might be having you in some stew. *grins*

Elladan: *grins* I won't be easy to catch! *rushes ahead, happy to be in the open*

Celegorm: *laughs and follows* I can see that!! *points to the top of the hill* Last one up has to set the rabbit snares!

Elladan: All right! *urges his horse into a gallop*

Celegorm: *races to the top of the hill and looks around with a grin* Did I win? I think I might have! *hops down off his horse and begins setting some snares* But since I'm a gracious winner, I'll help you with the traps.

Elladan: *laughs as he reaches the top* Thank you, oh great hunter! *dismounts* I let you win, but let's set the traps.

Celegorm: Uh huh. Sure you did. *winks* I think I'm just a better rider. *stands and places a hand on Elladan's shoulder* Right, then. I didn't bring Huan this time, since he likes to eat what I shoot, so we'll have to fetch our own prey. *scans the fields* Most of the quail should be in that hollow just down there. Since we don't have a dog to flush them out, we'll just need to walk toward them until they take flight.

Elladan: *knows that Celegorm won, but is in a teasing mood* All right, you are the best. *grins, and draws out an arrow, bow in hand* Can we find other than rabbits and quail here?

Celegorm: Probably, but we should stick to small game. I don't want to ride all the way home with a 200 pound buck strapped to the back of my horse. Is there anything else you had in mind? If not, let's flush out some quail.

Elladan: You are right. Elrohir and I stayed in the wild for long, so sometimes we looked for big game. Nothing else, I'm ready.

Celegorm: *frowns and tucks that comment away for later* Okay, you head straight down the hill. I will come around the left flank and chase the birds up and to the right. Be ready as soon as you start walking. *makes a large loop down the hill and comes up on the left side of the covey*

Elladan: *nods, knocks an arrow and shoots as soon as he sees the birds flying up* There! *shoots more arrows and misses one or two* Damn it!

Celegorm: *drops to one knee and fires off three quick shots* Not bad. Between the two of us we killed five. Help me find the birds. *searches through the grass*

Elladan: *admires Celegorm's skill* Not bad at all. And we might have caught some rabbits too. *helps him* My bag is in my saddle. I didn't tie my horse up. I hope he's still there.

Celegorm: *cups his hands round his mouth and calls out for the horses in their language and listens for a reply.* They're on the other side of the hill grazing. No worries. *grins and ties the birds together, then places them in his bag* Let's check on the rabbit traps.

Elladan: Good! *walks with him* You really speak their language... I read about it, of course, but it was written so long ago that I wondered how accurate it was. *they reach the area where they put the snares* I think we caught a few.

Celegorm: *shakes his head and laughs* It's so strange to hear you talk about me like that...Like I'm some sort of character from a book instead of just me. Let me assure you that at least that part of the story is true. *bends down to take a rabbit from a snare* Caught one. *holds it up by his ears* He's a big one, too.

Elladan: *apologetic grin* Sorry... Yes, a big one. Look, over there *walks ahead* Not so big, but will do. It must be useful to be able to speak to your horse. I can sense his mood, but that's all. Elrohir was more attuned to nature than I, anyway. Hunting with Lord Oromë must have been a wonderful experience.

Celegorm: It was. Those were probably the best days of my life, before everything got so strange with the jewels and the oath...Anyway, yes, speaking to animals does have certain benefits. Some are more forthcoming than others, though. Birds, very chatty. Squirrels, too. Cats, not so much.

Elladan: My best days were in Ennorath before my mother left. Everything got strange after that. I know it can't be compared with the Oath, but it was a turning point in our lives, my twin and I. At least he found peace in Valinor. *smiles* I think I will look for a dog. Might be a good company.

Celegorm: Dogs are good company. Huan has been a loyal companion for many years. It must be lonely for you here without your twin. Thankfully, I have my brothers with me...or most of them anyway.

Elladan: It is lonely without Elrohir, which is why I have two jobs. No social life yet, I'm afraid. *shrugs* This is a strange place for me to be, but I'm getting used to it. I heard there are four of you around.

Celegorm: Five, actually. Father is here, too, though he tends to stay out of sight. It's probably better that way since he can be rather...unpredictable. *wry smile*

Elladan: I suppose he would cause quite a stir everywhere he went. I'll admit I am curious about him, but I won't knock at his door without a good reason. *like telling Fëanor that he has read about him*

Celegorm: *chuckles* That's probably wise. He already has one admirer anyway. I think if another handsome young Elf showed up on his doorstep, he'd be entirely too full of himself.

Elladan: *grins*

Celegorm: Ready to head back?

Elladan: *sees the horses, smiles* Yes, ready. Thank you for the hunting trip. It's been great to be outside.

I am still wondering about the rabbit stew conversation. I have the feeling I am cooking myself now...
