The guards aren't all bad...

Nuala: *Gondolin is by far the largest city that Nuala has ever seen. It's size is matched only by its beauty in her eyes, but the uniformity of the streets and her inability to read the plaques that mark them mean that it's been uncommonly hard for her to learn her way around; her usual method of memorizing landmarks isn't quite as useful here, and she occasionally loses her way.

It's not a problem most of the time. She can backtrack and find her way without asking for directions. Today, however, she is looking for the weaver's guild and it is proving exceptionally difficult to find. Spying a guard (one with dark hair, clearly not a Rohirrim) she approaches and tries to get his attention.*

Beggin' your pardon, I don't suppose you could help me?

Boromir: *Is on his way back to the guard house after making his morning patrols. Pauses when he hears a request for help* Yes, ma'am, I'm happy to help. *smiles and steps forward* What can I do for you? *makes note of her unusual appearance*

Nuala: *smiling in response to his smile* I'm looking for the weavers' guild. Do you know where it is? *she holds up a piece of paper that has a drawing of their crest on it* There should be a sign outside but this city is so big that I can't find it for the life of me.

Boromir: *studies the drawing and thinks* If I remember correctly, there is a building not far from here with that sign in the window. It's only a few streets over. *points* If you take a right down to...Oh, nevermind. I'm going that way myself, so I can show you.

Nuala: *she is immediately relieved when he volunteers to show her the way instead of giving her directions* I'm much obliged, m'lord.
I hope it's not an inconvenience to you.

Boromir: Not at all. I'm Boromir, formerly of Gondor. I've only been here a few weeks, but I do know how confusing the city can be. How long have you been here?

Nuala: I'm Nuala, and I've only been here a few weeks. Maybe three? I've just opened a shop of my own and need to register with the guild. I weave and make garments.

Boromir: *nods* And I suppose the next question should be "when" are you from. It seems that a lot of us humans arrived here from the future. It's been a bit of an adjustment to step back in time and meet Elves I've only read about in the scrolls of history.

Nuala: It's difficult for me to say. I'm not very learned in the history of the world. It was winter when I arrived, and had been for some time. "The Long Winter," they call it. It was dreadful; I like it far better here.

Boromir: Winter back home could be fierce, so I know that of what you speak. So, you are a weaver, then? *flicks his eyes back to her and smiles, thinking that she looks quite solid for a weaver*

Nuala: I am. I learned the trade as a child. I can shear a sheep as quick as you please and spin the wool into thread, dye it, weave it, and sew it up into something nice to wear. It's a lot of work but it's pleasant enough. Though, here in the city, I have been shown machines that see for you; I'm learning how to use one now. It's easy enough, but they make a terrible noise when they work.

Boromir: That must be a useful skill to have. I'm good with a sword, but not so good at more domestic activities. But we can't all excel at everything we try. Do you focus on garments? What sort of things do you prefer to make?

Nuala: *not mentioning her own skill with a blade* Clothes and blankets. The markets here sell fabric aplenty in every variety you could imagine, but the blankets I weave myself. I like to make knotwork patterns. You should come by my shop and see what I have on the loom there.

Boromir: I'd like that. I'm in need of a good, thick blanket. Elves don't get cold like we do, and I find their blankets to not be warm enough for me. Do you take requests on colors and designs?

Nuala: Certainly. I have enough spun wool to make a nice blanket in any color I can find the dye for. What did you have in mind?

Boromir: A dark blue blanket with the White Tree of Gondor on it. I could draw you a picture of the tree to use as a template. *looks sad for a moment* When I left so suddenly, I took nothing with me. Maybe a blanket with the crest on it would make me feel a bit more at home here.

Nuala: I understand how that feels, I suppose, though I had only a scant few things to my name to begin with. It's the people I miss the most, but there's nothing for it. I never imagined I'd live in a place as amazing as this.

Boromir: It is amazing...it's just not home. *looks up and sees the weaver's guild crest* Ah! I think we have found the guild.

Nuala: No, it's not home, but it's better than my home ever was so I can't complain. *spotting the crest, she smiles with relief* So we have! Thank you for your help, and please do come by my shop. *she gives him directions from one of the central fountains* It's called "Nuala's."

Boromir: I will, definitely! I'm already looking forward to a new warm blanket.

Nuala: It'll be the best blanket you've ever owned. *smiling* And maybe it'll be like a little piece of home for you.

Boromir: *offers his hand* It was nice to meet you, Nuala, and if you ever need anything, just send word to the guard house.

Nuala: *shakes his hand from the wrist, as is her custom* I'll do that. It was nice meeting you, too, Boromir. *with that, she gives him a nod and a shallow curtsy and heads of into the guild's building*
