Good advice
After everything that went down at the guardhouse, I went to see Dred. He gave me some good advice. I do need to remember not to sneak kisses at work.
Boromir: *gets off of his guard shift and goes straight to Theo and Dred's cottage* Hey, Dred? *knocks on the door* Can I come in?
Dred: *goes to get it* Hey! Come on in. What's going on?
Boromir: *gives Dred a hug* I need some advice from you. About Dunlendings and Rohirrim.
Dred: *hugs* Dunlendings? *face falls a little* Oh dear. Is there some kind of problem?
Boromir: *takes Dred's hand and leads him to the sofa* Yes, *sighs heavily* And I am not sure how to handle it. I met a Dunlending a few days ago and she seems nice enough. A bit rough around the edges, but nice. Some of the guards from Rohan made some comments that make me wonder.
Dred: *starts massaging Boromir's shoulders when they're seated because he looks tense* Oh you've met her? I've heard..well that she's here. Not a lot else. I...haven't exactly gone over to say hello...*sighs* it's...one of those messes, culturally
Boromir: Can you explain? From what the guards said, they don't trust her, but to be honest, I was so angry about what they said, I did not have a chance to hear their explanations.
Dred: We're ancestral enemies is the main gist of things. There is a long, long, ugly history built up. I'm...not surprised they don't trust her, really. It's only, well, I can't say natural now that I've been here and met some of the others in the guard, but it's one of the things that we learn. This goes back to when Cirion granted us the land. The dunlendings had technically been there at the time...
Boromir: Well, I guess that makes sense that they wouldn't trust her, but I still think some of their comments went beyond those of a reasonable person. Calling her a snake just because of her heritage? *shakes his head and looks over his shoulder at Dred*
Dred: That...would not be that uncommon. I've been trying since I came here to look beyond everything at home. But those are the reasons. *sighs* I wonder if it would help if I were to go meet her. They would trust me, maybe, if I went and saw what the fuss was about.
Boromir: *swivels around to face Dred and takes one of his hands* Would you do that? I really think it would help things. *smiles* I know they all respect you...just like I do.
Dred: I can try that. I don't know if it WILL work but...this is also a new place. It doesn't make sense that we carry on with ALL of the old grudges now. We're all the foreigners here. ...Well all the humans.
Boromir: Yes, exactly! *gives Dred's hand a squeeze* I came down hard on the three guards. They probably don't trust me right now, so I have some thinking to do about how best to win back their confidence. I just...*frowns a little* It was unexpected to hear those words. I expected better from them. Any suggestions on how to approach them?
Dred: *considers what might work here* Coming down hard on them seems, well, natural because it's not something you would have understood completely. On the other hand, you don't want to look like you're supporting what they've said...
Boromir: Well, no. I can't do that, and won't do that. It's up to me to set a good example, and I can't tolerate bigotry. *rubs his forehead* Maybe I should just wait and see if things get better once you visit her.
Dred: That might be the best way to go. leaving it for now and things. It's...not theirs to question really.
Boromir: *grins* Yeah...thanks for listening. Somehow, just talking it all through makes it better. *leans back against the sofa and drapes an arm round Dred's shoulders* How are you? How's the ankle?
Dred: Doing better. I'm at the building up strength in it part. *demonstrates a flexing thing with the front of the foot*
Boromir: *raises his foot and does a flexy thing along with Dred* Not bad. Soon you'll be back at work. *grins* So, I guess I can't do things like this, right? *leans over and kisses his cheek* Favoritism and all that.
Dred laughs* Probably not, Fraternization!
Boromir: Yeah, they'd probably frown on that. *leans close and whispers in Dred's ear* But, there's this little shed out behind the guardhouse. *wiggles his eyebrows and grins*
Dred: Ooh really now? That might be something that requires...investigation
Boromir: *nuzzles Dred's ear* Mmmhmm, definitely...but until then, we'll have to settle for the sofa.
Dred: that works *grins at him*
Boromir: *gives him a kiss* ...unless there's somewhere else you'd recommend. *nibbles at his neck*
Dred: I can't think of anywhere better!
Boromir: *pushes Dred down and climbs on top of him, grinning* Then I hope the door is locked. *kisses him again*
Boromir: *gets off of his guard shift and goes straight to Theo and Dred's cottage* Hey, Dred? *knocks on the door* Can I come in?
