Longest day at work...

Turgon: *pays a visit to the guardhouse, listening to the sound of his guards doing... guard things, he'll have to ask Lio, and goes to let himself into Finrod's office to drop off his gift*

Finrod: *working on various things; fairly pleased with how things are coming along, all considered*

Turgon: *steps inside* Knock knock.

Finrod: *looks up* Hey!

Turgon: Hey. Iiii've got a gift for you. But first you have to give me a status report.

Finrod: *intrigued* Artificers looking at the altar, healers at the bodies - not that I think they'll find anything. What's this gift?

Turgon: *pulls out the little box with the phone and instructions* For you, darling cousin. A way for us to stay in contact. Remember the phones I was telling you about? They're online.

Finrod: Oh! *opens the box, examining the phone* That's exciting.

Turgon: Even more important you have one now that you're the temporary head of the guard.

Finrod: *reading how it works* So, I can talk to you one it from anywhere?

Turgon: Yep! The range is just outside the mountains. But by then I'd probably have been eaten by a terror bird.

Finrod: *tries calling Turgon to see if it works*

Turgon's phone: *starts beeping*

Turgon: *pulls it out and clicks the button* 'lo, Finrod. *voice comes out of Finrod's phone too*

Finrod: *grins* Oh how strange! *into the phone* Hello, Turu!

Turgon: This'll be just as fun when I'm calling you at three am to talk about my feelings.

Finrod: *glances at the instructions, then hangs up* At least you won't be climbing in my window.

Turgon: Well, if I do that again, I hope I'm bringing flowers for you first.

Finrod: Yes, I have standards you know.

Turgon: I can serenade you over this too. *sings a few snatches of song for Finrod, in as terrible a voice he can manage*

Finrod: That sounds appalling, Turu!

Turgon: You'll love it.

Guard: *knocks*

Finrod: Come in!

Guard: *steps inside, and quickly bows to Turgon and salutes Finrod* Sir, just informing you we've placed a human in the cells for assaulting an officer.

Finrod: *arches an eyebrow* Go on, explain...

Guard: She came in yelling at him, hit him, and continued to be belligerent. *is a Rohirrim, but staying proper* She was eventually escorted to spend the night there after a warning.

Finrod: *frowns* Who is 'him'? And have you filled out a formal report?

Guard: Actually, sir, that's why I came to you. I was the arresting officer, but I... can't really write. *embarrassed look* Rohirrim, sir. And she attacked constable Theoden.

Finrod: Oh, I see. *grabs a sheet of paper from one of the files* You dictate the incident to me, then.

Guard: Thank you, sir. *recites the incident, which as he saw it was a crazed Dunlending coming to attack a Rohirric officer*
Guard: She insists he wrote some sort of letter to her. He denies it.

Finrod: *writing* And could you describe this woman, please?

Turgon: *sitting back and listening, because interesting*

Guard: She's in the cells if you want to see her to check my report, but she's average siz-- *realizes he's talking to elves* a bit above five feet, light skin, dark hair, dark eyes, Dunlending.

Finrod: *nods, noting all this down* Thank you. Theoden, is he still here?

Guard: I'm not sure, sir. I came right to you. He may have gone out on patrol.

Finrod: Alright. Thank you.

Guard: *salutes and leaves*

Finrod: *longsuffering look at Turgon*

Turgon: I suppose illiterates, or people who don't write our language was inevitable in the guard when we started hiring other time periods.

Finrod: Yes, that is true. I'll have to hear what Theoden has to say.

Turgon: Can I watch? I don't usually observe Lio at work.

Finrod: *shrugs* I suppose so. *sends for Theo* How IS Lio?

Turgon: Recovering. Hopefully he'll survive being at Celegorm's. Who, by the way, bullied me into giving him a phone. He wouldn't let me have access to Lio unless I paid up.

Finrod: He seems to like Celegorm... *clearly something he can hardly make heads or tails of* So Celegorm has a phone as well then?

Turgon: Yes. I'm rationalizing it as it being a good idea for hunters to be able to contact us in case they're injured.
Turgon: The current hand out scheme was giving them to the people I need for running the city, then guards and healers, then the rest of the populace as required.
Turgon: But I suppose hunters are now included so it doesn't look like Celegorm won anything.

Finrod: *nods; thinks this could be convenient for keeping up with Celegorm's...hunting as well, without having to spend time in each other's company*
Finrod: Well, you could pass it off as kin, if there aren't enough for the hunters.

Turgon: That means claiming Celegorm's kin.

Theo: *arrives and knocks*

Finrod: Well, technically he is... *calls* Come in!

Theo: *steps inside* Sir, you wanted to see me?

Turgon: Wait, this isn't right, aren't you Theodred?

Theo: No, sir.

Turgon: Damn.

Finrod: Yes. *handwave at Turgon to be quiet* What's this about an assault?

Theo: Well, a Dunlending woman I know came in and started accusing me of writing her a letter and shoved me.
Theo: I didn't write her anything, I swear. I try to avoid her if I can, she keeps luring my cat to her.

Finrod: I'm sorry, your cat?

Theo: I have a pet cat. She keeps... I think she wants to eat him. Dunlendings eat anything they can kill.

Finrod: *arches an eyebrow* I see. And then what happened?

Theo: Well, she kept yelling and threatening and the other guards took her away. *doesn't want to mention what they were saying about her, because Rohirrim solidarity*

Finrod: Threatening how? And how many guards witnessed this event?

Theo: General threats. I'm not really sure what they were, she was yelling fast and I was really confused. She waved the letter at me, but like I said, I didn't write anything to her, and never would. I think there were about eight guards, most of the Rohirrim.
Theo: TheoDRED *quick glance at Turgon* wasn't there.

Finrod: Who were they? And please, be more specific than general threats. Give an example.

Theo: *lists the name of the Rohirrim he knows for sure were there* And just... threats that I needed to leave her alone, never talk to her again.

Finrod: So, she did not threaten to harm you or attack you?

Theo: She DID hit me, sir.
Theo: That's how she started. She stormed in and hit me.

Finrod: You said shoved before. Which was it? Did she strike you or push you?

Theo: Kind of both. I can demonstrate, if you want. *helpful*

Finrod: Yes, do.

Theo: Um. Let's pretend the wall is me, and I'm her. *shoves his hand out hard, to smack the wall with the palm out*

Finrod: And after that, you did...what exactly?

Theo: I stood there.
Theo: I was startled. Especially when she started talking about the letters.
Theo: ...and I didn't want her to go after me again. Dunlendings kill Rohirrim, and... *frowns and rubs the back of his head* I know she's smaller than me, but I didn't want to end up knifed on my break.

Finrod: How tall are you, Theoden? On a guess.

Theo: *sighs, tugging his braid* I'm 6'4, sir. And I'd rather be afraid of being hurt by a smaller woman than hit her, unless I was apprehending a criminal.

Finrod: So, you're telling me a woman smaller than yourself shoved you, and then proceeded to shout threatening things at you, such as never speak to her, but did not threaten to attack or harm you further?

Theo: *nods* She wouldn't leave when she was asked to, and that's when they escorted her to the cells. I'm not sure I would have done that. *honest*

Finrod: So at no time you felt endangered?

Theo: Well, I did, actually. I told you, where I come from people her size kill my people all the time.

Finrod: And you kill them too, do you not?

Theo: I have never killed a Dunlending.
Theo: And when we do, it's self defense. They come to our land in raids, we don't approach them. We have our land and we stick to it.
Theo: We're not a conquering people. We were giving our land a very long time ago and we've stuck with it.

Finrod: *steeples his fingers, a headache growing* Well, was this woman armed?

Theo: I have no idea. Her clothes were loose enough she could have had a knife. Sir, what do you want from me?

Finrod: Well, if she was arrested, any weapons would be removed from her person, surely. I just want to learn exactly what happened in this incident. I have a report of an assault on a guard. As said guard, I needed your statement.

Theo: May I speak freely?

Finrod: Yes.

Theo: It sounds like you're trying to get me to say it was nothing and we overreacted, sir.
Theo: I was in the breakroom with the other Rohirrim, a Dunlending known to me came and hit/shoved me, she was was yelling and would not leave when asked, so was escorted to the cells. Anything taken off her you'll have to ask the arresting officer, I was not the one who arrested her.
Theo: And her people have a history of causing great harm to mine, and I had reason to assume she would have hurt me, plus my own reluctance to harm a smaller woman, regardless of what I thought her capable of, meant I did not retaliate in any way.

Finrod: *is exceptionally good at reading people, and what they do not say aloud; nods despite misgivings* It is well you did not. Thank you, Theoden, that will be all.

Theo: *salutes, and leaves, frowning to himself about keeping things back*

Turgon: That was fun. What do you do now?

Finrod: *rubs his forehead* Talk to the other seven guards. See if they are more forthcoming. And the woman, hear what she has to say. See if my misgivings are proved or disproved.

Turgon: And what are those, temporary captain? *genuinely interested*

Finrod: You tell me first. How did it sound to you?

Turgon: Like he wasn't sure.

Finrod: That is what I thought too. He was keeping things back.

Turgon: Well, at least you have the other half of the argument sitting waiting for you.

Finrod: *nods* I get the feeling I'm going to get a rather different version of events, don't you?

Turgon: I'll leave that in your capable hands. I've got another phone to deliver. Don't destroy the guard while Lio's out of commission, hm?

Finrod: I'll try not to! I'm going to visit Lio after I'm done here. Dinner after?

Turgon: Sounds good.

Finrod: Good. *grins a little* I'll call you if I'm late.

This is most disturbing. I must speak to this woman and the other guards. It's clear Theoden was not entirely forthcoming. I would hate to think that there are some in the guard who might not treat all citizens equitably.

And those reports from the healers and the artificers had better come soon.
