The worst part of my job
Unfortunately, I had to arrest some of my own guards for arson today. It was disappointing, and I know Theo was upset, but it had to be done.
Theo: *filling out the paperwork for his patrol that day when Boromir returns to the guardhouse*
Boromir: *walks into Theo's office and sits down on the edge of his desk* Theo.
Theo: *looks up from the share desk for his shift* 'lo. How was your looking about?
Boromir: *rubs his forehead* Productive. After my last visit with the crow, I did some additional checking up. It turns out he wasn't the only witness to the crime. An elf with a shop across the road, the one with all the fruity smelling candles, saw something too.
Theo: *uneasy look* what did they see?
Boromir: *sighs and looks at Theo* Two guards. Two guards with light hair carrying bottles and struggling to ignite something.
Theo: ...oh. I see. That's um. That's not good
Boromir: No, it isn't. Based on his description, I'd say they were both Rohirrim. All that is left to do is check the duty roster to see who would have just left and still be in uniform.
Theo: do you want me with you for arresting them?
Boromir: *earnest* I think it is important that we show how serious this crime is, and if you come with me, it will make a strong statement that what they did is wrong, regardless of the political tensions that exist.
Theo: *quick nod, looking reluctant but pulls up his hood and grabs his sword* I know Nyel's here too
Boromir: Good. We may need backup. *walks over to his desk and checks the old roster.* Looks like Eodwig and Godric had been on duty earlier in the day. They'd fit the description.
Theo: Sergeant Angwen told me to stay away from Godric after she heard one of his rants. *frowns* She's kind of protective
Nyel: *puzzling over the coffee machine, but comes when summoned*
Boromir: *shows Nyel the roster* I think we have our perpetrators.
Nyel: *checks the shift list* looks like they're guarding the gates right now.
Boromir: *chin up* Then let's get this over with.
Theo and Nyel: *march behind Boromir, Theo not looking particularly happy*
Theo: I didn't want it to be one of us...
Nyel: *glances over* You've got to stop thinking of people as a single unit. I know of more'n few Umbars who'd be furious if they were associated with me
Nyel: you raid a few ships...
Boromir: *pretends not to hear the raiding bit* She's right. You're not responsible for their actions.
Theo: but we're supposed to be good and noble and never lie...
Nyel: that's not very... possible.
Theo: mng.
Boromir: It's something to aspire to *puts his hand on Theo's shoulder* I'm sorry that we have to do this. I had hoped it wouldn't be a guard, either.
Theo: the captain's not going to like this
Boromir: No, he won't. He'll be upset and disappointed and probably angry that the screening process wasn't more thorough, but we can work on that. *reaches the gates and looks at the guards* Godric, come here please.
Godric: *looks up from trying to light a pipewed cigarette and walks over warily* Sir.
Theo and Nyel: *stand and look official behind Boromir*
Boromir: Come here. *points to a spot right in front of where he stands.* You, too, Eodwig.
Eodwig: *puts two and two together and bolts*
Nyel: *after him like a shot, going up a wagon and leaping tackles*
Theo: *running after so she doesn't get thumped*
Godric: ... *hangs his head and stands by Boromir*
Boromir: *grabs Godric by the arm in case he decides to take off* I suppose you know why we are here...*frowns and tries to catch Godric's eye*
Godric: ... we were doing a good thing
Boromir: A good thing? By destroying and honest business and nearly killing someone in the process? It's a crime. *turns Godric around and handcuffs him* I'm placing you under arrest for arson.
Godric: *shoulders slump*
Nyel and Theo: *bring in Eodwig*
Boromir: Nice work, Nyel...Theo. *gives Godric a tug back in the direction of the jail*
Theo: *upset and frowning after once they get back*
Boromir: *hands them off to the jail guards for processing* Theo...? I know this must be difficult.
Theo: *little nod* yeah. My shift's over, I'm gonna head home
Boromir: *nods* Of course. *feels bad for Theo, but is happy the criminals are in jail*
Theo: good luck telling the captain
Boromir: *gives a weak smile* Thanks. I'll need it.
Theo: *heads out*
