The one where I screw up.
Ecthelion: *goes to get a cotton ball to put some salve on Baini's burnt paw; while digging for one, finds something else; pulls out a silmaril and stares* What the hell...
Celegorm: *is busy reading a book about leather tanning* Huh...I should try that sometime.
Ecthelion: *comes into the den* Look what I found... *holds out his hand; does not sound happy*
Celegorm: *puts the book down* Oh, what is...Oh. *runs his hand through his hair and looks sheepish* Yeah.
Ecthelion: Yeah? You're keeping a silmaril in with the cotton balls?
Celegorm: For now...and yes, I know it's a fire hazzard, but I had to stash it somewhere until I could come up with a more long term storage solution.
Ecthelion: *thought occurs to him* Is this what Baini burned her paw on? *although why the kitten would be in the cotton balls is beyond him*
Celegorm: Yes. I found it last weekend when Huan and Baini went with me to the park. It was in the shallow part of the pond. I fished it out, put it in my pocket, Baini got nosy and pawed it.
Ecthelion: Wait, this isn't the silmaril Theoden found? It's a second one?
Celegorm: *bites his lip and nods*
Ecthelion: Where's the first? Why didn't you tell me you found a second one?
Celegorm: *reaches over, takes a rubber plug out of the bottom of Mae's clay bird and lets the other silm fall into his hand* Here.
Ecthelion: *stares* You had it here all along.
Celegorm: *nods again*
Ecthelion: Why didn't you tell me?
Celegorm: With the first one, it was more about where to keep it. I mean, you already knew about that one. My job was to keep it safe and away from both Father and Turgon. When I found the second one, I kind of freaked out. In fact, I've been trying to figure out how to tell you...
Ecthelion: You should have just said. And does your father know about this second one? Does Turu?
Celegorm: I know, I know. I should have told you straightaway...Nobody knows but Kano and you. Well, and the kitten.
Ecthelion: So you're just ... hiding them both?
Celegorm: What else can I do? I can't let Father have them because he'll use them to create a weapon of mass destruction or a portal to Mordor or something heinous. Eru knows what Turgon would do with them, but they aren't his and he'd insist on keeping them. So...they're here until I can think of what to do with them. *shrugs* I'm open to suggestions.
Ecthelion: *sighs* I dunno, I just think it's dangerous to have both of them here. And.... Turgon should know.
Celegorm: No, absolutely not. Turgon needs to stay in the dark.
Ecthelion: He knows about the first one. He agreed to let your father have it, as it was his property.
Celegorm: Father doesn't need to have it. *arches an eyebrow* Surely you agree with me on that.
Ecthelion: *rubs his forehead* Well, yes, true, but... technically they're his. That was the argument I used on Turu to let your father have the first one.
Celegorm: ...shit...I didn't know you'd argued on Father's behalf. *feels like a jerk* I had just assumed since you were Turu's best friend that...*closes his eyes* Nevermind. I'm an ass.
Ecthelion: *annoyed, but there's a fondness in his tone too* Well, yes, you are, but... okay, I have to tell Turu you have this one.
Celegorm: *unconvinced* Why? Why does he need to know about it? If we can find a good place to keep it, no one else has to find out.
Ecthelion: Because it's my job. And he's my best friend. I can't lie to him. And if he found out I was... it could be treason.
Celegorm: And that's why I didn't want to tell you. I figured you'd react that way.
Ecthelion: *takes a deep breath; trying to think this through* Okay, I understand that. But I know now.
Celegorm: *sighs heavily* Yeah, you do. So what are you planning on telling him?
Ecthelion: I'm going to have to think about it.
Celegorm: Fair enough. Will you talk about it with me once you've decided?
Ecthelion: *mildly surprised* Of course. I won't say anything to him without letting you know.
Celegorm: *drops the silm in his pocket and stands up* Thanks. Thanks for all of it, for being understanding, for letting me be an ass. I know my trust issues can be hard to deal with.
Ecthelion: *looks up at him* I wish you felt like you could trust me...
Celegorm: *reaches for Lio's hand* I want to. I'm trying to. Centuries of only trusting myself is a hard habit to unlearn. Regardless, I'm trying. If there's anyone I can trust, it's you.
Ecthelion: I know. *squeezes Celegorm's hand* What are you going to do with the silmaril?
Celegorm: *grins* Which one? I need to find better storage options for both of them.
Ecthelion: Away from Baini, at least. *considers* I don't mind if you keep them here, I mean.... now that I know.... but would it be safer to have them in different places?
Celegorm: *fishes the silm out of his pocket and holds it next to the one in Lio's hand. they both start glowing* That would be a yes. Things happen when you put them together.
Ecthelion: Yeah. I was afraid of that.
Celegorm: *drops it back in his pocket* So, I need to find some metal containers, preferably lead lined, to store them. Until then, I don't know where to put them. Other than not in the cotton bin.
Ecthelion: *puts the other in his own pocket, for now* Somewhere the kitten can't get to them.
Celegorm: *looks around the room.* What about one in that box on the top shelf of the bookcase? The box with the little seashells all over it?
Ecthelion: *nods* As good as any place, I suppose.
Celegorm: *reaches up and puts the silm in the box* Now, where to stash the other one. Suggestions?
Ecthelion: Maybe in the pantry, in the barrel of flour.
Celegorm: Good idea. *holds out his hand*
Ecthelion: *pulls it out of his pocket and gives it to him* Are you going to tell your father?
Celegorm: No way. Not until I'm sure his sanity is more than a fleeting thing. *drops the sim down in the flour barrell and covers it with flour*
Ecthelion: But... won't it just make him angry, that you have both?
Celegorm: *opens his mouth to say "not if he doesn't find out" but then realizes Turgon will probably tell him* Probably. Definitely. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
Ecthelion: I don't want your father storming our house for these.
Celegorm: Good point. *rubs his forehead* Let me think about where to keep them. There's got to be somewhere.
Ecthelion: I know you won't like this, but Turgon has plenty of safe space in his tower. Guarded rooms.
Celegorm: That's out of the question. If Father would storm our house for them, imagine what he'd do to the castle. The last thing we need is my father inciting a civil war.
Ecthelion: *nods, looking troubled*
Celegorm: *pulls Lio into a hug* We'll figure something out. I promise.
Ecthelion: *nods* Okay. We will. Just... try to remember to tell me things like this.
Celegorm: *nods and kisses Lio's forehead* I will. I promise. Forgive me for being an ass?
Ecthelion: *smiles* You being an ass is part of your appeal.
Celegorm: *chuckles* Good to know that my assiness is appreciated.
Ecthelion: Always. But... *serious voice* There's still a third silmaril out there.
Celegorm: I know. And that's when they'll be dangerous. With two, it's not so bad, but with three...there will be trouble.
Ecthelion: Do you think.... if you have all three, they'll be safe?
Celegorm: I honestly don't know. They're alive, you know. And they seem to create chaos.
Ecthelion: *shudders, thinking of it*
Celegorm: But remember this: they will burn anyone who touches them who isn't their rightful owner. Neither you nor I were burned when we handled them. That is a good sign.
Ecthelion: *nods, thinking* I suppose. What we need to do is find two separate places to keep these, two safe places. And a third, just in case the other shows up.
Celegorm: Exactly. Let's each think on it some. I'm sure we can come up with something.
Ecthelion: I'll think of what I'm going to say to Turgon.
Celegorm: *nods* Alright.
Ecthelion: I'll try to make him understand. I can't promise anything though. *not looking forward to this; unhappy face*
Celegorm: *hugs him close* I know, and I'm not either.
Ecthelion: *soft voice* No more secrets, Cele...
Celegorm: *melts, feels awful* No more secrets. I swear it.
Ecthelion: Okay. We'll figure something out.
Celegorm: *gives Lio's forehead another kiss* Yes, we will.
Ecthelion: Two silmarils. I can't believe it.
Celegorm: Me either. What about a walk to get our minds off of it?
Ecthelion: Yes. To the pub. For a stiff drink.
Celegorm: *chuckles and holds out his hand* Absolutely.
Ecthelion: *takes it* Or two. At least two.
Celegorm: *kisses his fingers* However many you want.
Ecthelion: I think I want a lot. *trying to smile, but is still concerned*
Celegorm: It'll be okay. *squeezes Lio's hand* Let's go.
Celegorm: *is busy reading a book about leather tanning* Huh...I should try that sometime.
Ecthelion: *comes into the den* Look what I found... *holds out his hand; does not sound happy*
