People do like to drop by. First that little redhead human child. Too bad he didn't bring that coffee this time.
But then I got another, very welcome visitor!
Feänor: *working on a new sword at his forge*
Maitimo: *walks up and knocks on the door, peeking in* Father?
Feänor: *recognizes the voice and spins around* Nelyafinwë!
Maitimo: *steps forward* Tyelcormo told me you were here...I just arrived myself.
Feänor:: *carefully puts down his tools and the sword; rushes to hug him* Welcome!
Maitimo: *hugs him back, tentatively* It's nice to see you, Father. You look well...
Feänor: Well. I'm better than I was. Considering I was dead. *steps back and looks him over; always had a soft spot for his firstborn* You look very well. Here, come, sit. *clears a space at the work table for him*
Maitimo: *joins his father at the table* Dead? when? how? Only a few nights ago, we were...*sighs* swearing that oath.
Feänor: *rummaging around for a bottle of brandy and glasses; pours them each a shot* Here. Yes, dead. It happened after the oath.
Maitimo: *downs the shot* I guess I missed a lot, then...*looks at Feanor* About that oath. I wish I hadn't made it.
Feänor: Yes - they have a place here? House of History? Where you can find out all that happened. Very interesting stuff. And yes. Your brother mentioned that as well.
Maitimo - I suppose I should go. *raises his right hand* Apparently, I lost a hand at some point. I'd rather not read up on that just now. So...let's forget about the oath. And the silmarils. And the rest of it. What are you working on?
Feänor: *nods* As far as the oath is concerned, it is over. This is a different time, and your cousin has consented to give us all a second chance. So we will leave the oath to that other time, and perhaps try to... if not repent, do better this time around.
Maitimo: *smiles, relieved, and pours them each another shot* To second chances! *raises his glass and downs the contents*
Feänor: To second chances. *does the same* I know from the histories that the oath was hard on all of you. But it seems that you had more than your share of difficulties. I am sorry, for all of that. *is kind of getting the hang of this apologizing thing!* And to answer your question, I am working on a sword.
Maitimo: *gives Feanor's shoulder a squeeze* Thank you. That means a lot to me, Father. A sword? Let me see it!
Feänor: *shows him* It's just about finished. I visited the smiths here in the city, but ... well. My work is better.
Maitimo: Of course it is. Your work is always flawless. May I? *picks it up and turns it over in his hands* I'd love for you to make one for me.
Feänor: *nods* If you like that one, it's yours.
Maitimo: *holds it upright and takes a few practice swings* I love it. Just the right weight for battle. *looks up suddenly at Feanor* Not that I want to fight...It's good to be prepared, though.
Feänor: I'm glad you like it! Take it, you never know when you'll need it. It IS good to be prepared.
Maitimo: Once it's finished, I'll be back for it. *puts it down* Turgon seems like he has security well in hand. He's never struck me as being a particulary good leader, but perhaps I was wrong.
Feänor: *nods* I know! But aside from the sudden appearances, which he can't control, things do seem to be running very well here. He does have that Captain of the Guard, who I met. Seems like a competent fellow.
Maitimo: I haven't met him yet, but maybe I should go and offer my services. It couldn't hurt and it would give me something to do. Oh...and Fingon is here. Have you met him?
Feänor: No, I haven't. I didn't know he was here. I asked for my brother, but Turukano said he hasn't arrived. *does wonder what he'd do if Fingolfin turned up here*
Maitimo: *raises his eyebrows* That could be for the best. Uncle always has been a bit on the difficult side. *hopes he doesn't show up* Turgon said Fingon was planning a big social event. I think I may try to help him. If he needs it, I mean.
Feänor: *nods* You're probably right about your uncle. And a big social event, hmm? Something you'd be interested in?
Maitimo: Possibly. *really just wants to see Fingon* It would be a nice change of pace from the rather mundane day-to-day activities around here.
Feänor: I suppose. You do need something to keep yourself occupied. *knows that he and Fingon were friends* And it will be nice for you to see your cousin again.
Maitimo: *grins* I've missed seeing him. Even before I arrived here, it has been many months since we had spoken.
Feänor: Well, it will be good for you to catch up then. *doesn't mention that whole ship-burning thing, let him read about that himself* Where are you staying? With Turkafinwë? Do you need a place? I have a spare room.
Maitimo: I'm with him for now, but I need to move out. He's grating on my nerves. I had asked Turgon for an apartment...I should see if it is available yet.
Feänor: *nods* Do that, but know you are welcome here.
Maitimo: *gives his father a hug* Thank you. It's good to know that. And when I have a place, you are always welcome there, too.
Feänor: *smiles* Well, you won't want me. I'm cranky, you know.
Maitimo: Yes...I remember. *grins* So am I. So is Carnistir and Tyel. I guess we all take after you.
Feänor: You do at that. The rest took after your mother.
Maitimo: *laughs* Wouldn't it be fun if she turned up here?
Feänor: *smiles* If she doesn't show up angry with me. *slightly wistful tone* I would like to see her though.
Maitmo: Me, too. I miss hearing her laughter. I don't miss her scolding me about folding my clothes.
Feänor: Well, we shall see. It would be nice to have the whole family here.
Maitimo: Yes, it would. How are you spending your time?
Feänor: Working here at the forge. Visiting the houses of the artificers and history. Learning about all these new creations. Fascinating stuff! *eyes light up, about to launch into a monologue on elevators*
Maitimo: *recognizes that look and stands up* Right, then! I'm afraid I have to be going, Father, but it's been great talking with you. Can I come again soon to pick up the sword?
Feänor: *nods; will tell him about elevators at another time* Yes, I should be done with it soon. I'll make you a sheath for it as well, of course.
Maitimo: *grins* Great! *gives him a quick hug* Take care, Father.
Feänor: You too, son. *turns back to his work, already absorbed*
So wonderful that Nelyafinwë is here now! I hope he finds something to occupy his time - perhaps he and Fingon will find some enterprise for them both.
I best finish this sword for him. He might have need of it.
