Family matters

Caranthir: *is looking through a couple of books about the mines outside the city*

Maglor: Did you find anything interesting?

Caranthir: Yes. There are few mines, but you'll be able to get the jewels father wants.

Maglor: You mean you'll be able to get them.

Caranthir: *frowns* Father implied I was troublesome.

Maglor: He implies that everyone is troublesome. Don't worry about it.

Caranthir: All right. I know I promised I would go mining. I've been meeting with cousins lately.

Maglor: *nods* And you love mining! *cocks his head* Cousins, really? Which ones?

Caranthir: Yes. I just wish father was the same I escaped from in Tirion... Ah: I met Turukáno, near the scene of the murder. And then I met Findaráto near the palace.

Maglor: I know. You met Turukáno? *interesting...* Did...that go well? And with Findaráto? When did he get here?

Caranthir: *closes the books* The conversation with Turukáno was strange. He said he was not going to blame the murder on any of us just because we are who we are. He invited me to eat. I am still wondering if he put something in my food...

Maglor: *grins* I highly doubt that he did.

Caranthir: *scowls a bit* I know... I just met Findaráto later, and I was less angry than I should have been... I mean, I read the story and I was angry at Uncle Arafinwë's sons. It was strange not to feel anger...

Maglor: Wait, what do you mean you weren't as angry as you should have been? I've missed something.

Caranthir: In the future... I was supposed to be angry at them...

Maglor: Ohh...Well, I don't see any reason to be angry now, for something that hasn't happened.

Caranthir: I know. I just... Never mind. Forget I mentioned it. Findaráto was rather nice.

Maglor: I do remember him being pretty even tempered.

Caranthir: *nods, relieved* Yes. He came from the ice, though. Oh, and he met Turko. That conversation can't have gone well.

Maglor: Oh...Oh dear... That isn't good at all, either count!

Caranthir: he didn't say anything, really, but it was obvious it wasn't good. So I told him that he had been a good king. I was... nice to him. he said he was going to read more about what happened to him and his siblings.

Maglor: *rather proud, really* That's incredibly kind of you, Moryo. I wonder if he is here then. *peers around*

Caranthir: *smiles, pleased* He might be. I told him that you and Maitimo were here.

Finrod: *indeed, sat at a table and reading not all that far away; just history up until the present, which hasn't been all bad*

Caranthir: I told him you came from the far future... Isn't that him in the far corner?

Maglor: *looks where he points* Yes, I think so. Come on, we should say hello.

Caranthir: *follows him*

Finrod: *feels someone coming; looks up* Cousins, hello.

Maglor: Hello, Findaráto.

Caranthir: Hi. So you came to read... What's the book about?

Finrod: Makalaurë. It's just the most recent history. From arriving in Middle earth to now.

Maglor: *nods; doesn't really want to ask him how he's finding it*

Caranthir: *hopes he hasn't reached the battle of Sudden Flame* I see...

Finrod: *no, has not yet* It's mostly been a description of realms, and the Siege. *is admittedly curious about the city he's founded*

Caranthir: I've read about that. It's a long period. *glances at Maglor* It seems we all had realms of our own.

Maglor: *nods* And now we're all here. It's strange.

Finrod: *well, cannot argue with that* Yes, quite. I'd be interested to see my own.

Caranthir: It might be still there... With you in it. Can it be possible that we are all outside and inside the city?

Maglor: I want to say no, but can't be sure.

Finrod: *would be game for finding out*

Caranthir: So if we are here, Findaráto and I, we might not have arrived in these lands ever... Arakáno didn't die, and... *wants to ask Maglor if he still remembers him dying but can't really do that*

Maglor: *remembers very clearly* I don't think there is any logical way to explain it. Clearly none of us should be here in this city according to history, but we haven't yet seen how it will change the future.

Caranthir: *so his nightmares might mean something*

Finrod: I suppose there's no concession on leaving, either.

Caranthir: No. We will go mining with a guard. *frowns at that*

Maglor: A guard to protect our backs from enemies.

Finrod: *unfortunate, but still Turgon favours him, or did!*

Caranthir: And to prevent us from escaping this city. Only hunters and those who mine go out, and the Gates guards.

Finrod: *a touch disappointed* That's very strict.

Caranthir: I know, but Turukáno is a bit paran... he doesn't want anyone to discover his hidden city.

Maglor: Which is not illogical.

Finrod: *supposes not; still* Of course.

Caranthir: Glorfindel is out, I think.

Maglor: Out of the city?

Finrod: *aha! hope. and leverage*

Caranthir: I think so, in some mission.

Maglor: Well, he is a guard.

Caranthir: *nods* Your city was also somewhat hidden, Findaráto. You must have read that.

Finrod: I did yes. I suppose that might make it a challenge to find.

Caranthir: And if you are here, maybe Angaráto and Aikanáro are there. *maybe shouldn't have said that* Maybe the twins are in Lake Helevorn... No they would still be in the woods.

Finrod: *looks thoughtful* Interesting idea. *closes his book* Forgive me though, cousins, I must be going. I've an appointment. *apologetic look*

Maglor: Of course, Findaráto...

Caranthir: *nods, watches him go* You seemed to be uncomfortable, Káno.

Maglor: *looks at him* I do?

Caranthir: We were speaking of being here while you did go through it all. I was wondering if that made you uncomfortable.

Maglor: It is disconcerting, sometimes, that's true. I was just thinking about what you said regarding Finrod's arrival, is all.

Caranthir: About what?

Maglor: That he'd come from the Ice.

Caranthir: At least he is here now, and won't die. Do you realize this means Father won't die either? Unless he escapes the city, that is...

Maglor: *slight grin* Well, it IS Father...

Caranthir: Yes... I dreamed of him, you know? Of his death.

Maglor: You did? His...death as written in history, or something else?

Caranthir: I'm not sure... There was fire, and we were there, all of us. And he died, and his body burned... *eyes wide, seeing it again*

Maglor: *frowns, touching his shoulder* It was a dream, Moryo. That is all.

Caranthir: *blinks, comes out of it* I know. When I was at home, sometimes I dreamed of things and they happened. Simple things. Never deaths. Maybe I should not read those particular books for a while.

Maglor: *agrees* Perhaps not. Your mind is just recreating the dark accounts you've read.

Caranthir: Yes, I suppose. I was just wondering if that meant my older self is not there anymore and somehow... *has a headache now* Maybe I should sleep more and read less. I hope we can go back to our passage soon. I've been reading until late in the secret room. I stayed here all night.

Maglor: *raises his eyebrows* Then I'd say you definitely ought to sleep more and read less. We will go to the passage soon. Talk to Tyelkormo about it. And we shall go out in search of gems.

Caranthir: *nods slowly* Yes, I've been sleeping a few nights actually. I'll ask Turko. When are you and I going out to mine?

Maglor: When would you like to? Next week?

Caranthir: That would be good. *smiles, sleepy*

Maglor: Good. I'll make arrangements with Ecthelion. You, though, should go home and rest!

Caranthir: Oh, I will. Walk me home?

Maglor: Sure.

Finrod seems different than I remember. I'm trying to recall how he was immediately after their arrival in Hithlum, but I was a little preoccupied at the time. So maybe not so different then.

I also wonder what Father said to Caranthir, but he's been known to step on toes more than occasionally. I hope mining will ease Caranthir's mind because there's no way I am going to mine myself on a regular basis. But I am glad that he actually talked to Turgon and I think, from the sound of it, it went well enough. Maybe we can avoid at least a little of the drama within the family this time around...

I went to sleep, and I dreamed of you mining, Káno.

*grins* We'll see.

*pales* I told you! He put something in my food!

By Eru, don't even joke about that, Káno! *grins*

*can't think of anything else to tease Káno with*
