I have come to learn some strange things while in Gondolin and adjusting to the surroundings. Aside from meeting the family members who had died before I was born, and attempting to learn my way around the place, I've come to a decision regarding the training I've had at home, and done something that I think my grandfather, aunt and uncles still left at home would be proud of, were I able to speak to them about it now, and what my mother and father would smile at, but perhaps not act so surprised over. I've applied for a position on the council of nobles here.
Gelgannel:*at his desk in front of Turgon's office fielding appointments*
Elfwine: *has arrived there to, well, make his case*
Gelgannel:*looks at his schedule book* Elfwine. son of Eomer? *a bit of 'if you are not this person, you should leave' tone*
Elfwine: That would be me, yes *firmly nods*
Gelgannel:I'll see if the king is ready for you. *hits the intercom button* Sir? Your four o'clock is here.
Turgon: *from the mouthpiece* Send him in
Gelgannel:*gets up, standing over Elfwine and goes to pull open the doors for him*
Elfwine: Thank you.
Turgon: *at his desk, trying out the phone recently delivered to him. The controls, anyway*
Elfwine: *puzzled by what he's doing but doesn't show it and waits there politely*
Turgon: please! Sit down. *sets it aside, looks like some sort of metal and crystal*
Turgon: Now. You wanted to talk to me about a position on my council?
Elfwine: I did, my lord, yes. I was told at the red building that I should do that. My father is the king of the Riddermark. And I am his heir .
Turgon: have you got any experience with leadership?
Elfwine: With the diplomatic elements of it and I have been working with my father's council for six years. I don't oversee every matter but I have observed and offered advice where it was asked for.
Turgon: diplomacy's an excellent skill to have, and I haven't got any Rohirrim yet, despite... *checks the notes Gelgannel had* you making up 13% of my human populace.
Elfwine: I had met several countrymen, yes. It's very good to have others here. Which sounds awful to say as beautiful as the city is.
Turgon: Everyone likes familiarity. I'm a little concerned about one detail. I had research done on you, to verify your claim, and we actually have a lovely list of the various rulers over time, but for some reason your country stops with you.
Turgon: you can understand this has left me concerned. It doesn't say why you're the last king.
Elfwine: That IS problematic. Perhaps because this is the furthest in time someone has come?
Turgon: I hope that's it. *taps his pen to his lips, thinking* Well, you don't look particularly like you'd cause a kingdom to go down in flames.
Elfwine: I would hope not. I think my parents would be appalled.
Turgon: *laughs* Well. You're welcome to come to the council meetings. Probationary, but feel free to speak your mind during meetings. It's how I'll know what to do with you.
Elfwine: *smiles* Thank you very much. I'll be certain to do that.
Turgon: very good. And spread the word in your community about your appointment, so they know to come to you with concerns.
Elfwine: I will certainly do that.
Turgon: very good. Pleasure to have you on.
And now I'm left with more questions than I had before; I cannot deny that much. It puzzles me that I am the last of the kings of the mark that anyone has heard of in the records here. I cannot say I know the answer or what is to come, but with any luck, I will have answers in the days ahead.
I am also puzzled that I am the first of my countrymen to step up and take a place in the council. It hardly makes sense considering the ancestors I've met here that they would not want to do the same.
Questions to ponder, I suppose. And so many more things to learn.
