The one where I find a brother in my flowerbed

Lots of interesting things turn up in flowerbeds here...a silmaril, a brother. I'm almost afraid to ask what might be found next?

Celegorm: *hears an odd noise out in the backyard. Draws his sword. Motions for Huan, who sniffs and begins to whine* Someone is in the backyard. On the count of three, I’ll open the door and you bite him.

Huan: woof (softly)

Celegorm: One, two *flings open the door to see his brother standing in the middle of the flowerbed, looking lost* Holy shit!

Huan: *rushes over to Maedhros and licks him from head to toe*

Maedhros: Oi! Stop! Stop! *pushes Huan away and locks eyes with Celegorm* Tyelkormo, call off your hound, you ass! *grins*

Celegorm: Maitimo! *runs over to him and gives him a huge hug* When did you arrive??!

Maedhros: Just now…well, perhaps an hour or so ago, but you were not in and I hesitated to search for you since I’m not sure where I am.

Celegorm: Gondolin, believe it or not, our paranoid cousin Turgon’s hidden city. *pulls back to study his brother* You look well. Quite well, especially for one so battle-tested as you. And you have two hands again.

Maedhros: *confused* I’ve always had two hands.

Celegorm: Yes, until Fingon cut one of them off.

Maedhros: *rubs his head, feels nauseated* I need to sit.

Celegorm: *ushers him inside, sits him on a chair and pours some whiskey* Sip this slowly. Now, tell me what is the last thing you remember?

Maedhros: *sniffs the whiskey, then downs it in one gulp* Telling Father about Uncle Finwe’s murder, and the loss of the Silmarili. He took it rather hard, as I recall.

Celegorm: *snorts* That’s an understatement. And the oath? You do remember that?

Maedhros: *fills his glass again and quaffs about half of it* Oh, yes. That I remember with remarkable clarity. Father had a stroppy rant, incited you and Atarinke to ragey speeches of your own, and then we took the oath. I remember going to sleep that night wishing I could take it all back. I awoke this morning, here. *looks at Celegorm* Am I missing anything?

Celegorm: *pats his hand* Quite a bit, actually, but I’ll spare you the messy details for now. Just know that we are all on a second chance…including Father.

Maedhros: We’re all here, then?
Celegorm: No, just you, Father and me. I suppose the rest of us will pop up eventually, but for now, we’re it.

Maedhros: And Fingon? *looks hopeful*

Celegorm: Oh, he’s here. I’ve managed to avoid him, but you will probably want to look him up given how close you were. *grins* Extremely close.

Maedhros: *frowns* Of course we were close. He was my best friend.

Celegorm: Uh huh. If that’s how you choose to define it.

Maedhros: *downs the rest of his whiskey* That’s the only way to define it. *wonders what else he’s forgetting*

Celegorm: You and he have a lot to sort out, then. And we should probably pay visit to the archives. It might be less jarring to read about all of the things we did while under the oath than for me to say them out loud.

Maedhros: *pales* …such as?

Celegorm: Oh, invading, kidnapping, burning of boats, destroying kingdoms, that sort of thing. I will say that you escaped the worst of it. The title of kinslayer is mine, but not yours.

Maedhros: *feels nauseated again* Tyelkormo, what have you done??

Celegorm: Nothing, here in this time. That is what I meant by a second chance. We can escape the shadow of the oath and live the lives we were always meant to live. Especially you, with no knowledge of anything that happened after you uttered those fateful words.

Maedhros: *sinks back into the chair* I think I need some time to absorb it all. *closes his eyes*

Celegorm: *rubs his shoulder* Of course. When you are ready, we’ll go see Turgon to let him know you have arrived. Finding Fingon is up to you.

Maedhros: *nods weakly. Hopes his head stops spinning* Thank you, Tyel.

I guess I'll have to tell him about the Silmaril, but for now, I'll just let him get used to being trapped in a city with Turgon.
